Planning your book... From Dream to Print

HOW BIG?

Select dimensions and orientation (square, landscape or portrait), any size to 12 x 18. Common sizes are 6x9, 8.5x11, and 11x14 in either landscape or portrait orientation. We also frequently do square sized books in 8x8, 9x9, or 10x10. And if we can print multiple book pages on a 12 x 18 sheet, you'll save money.

COLOR?

Based on content, imagery and text, do you envision your book in crisp black and white, rich greyscale or lush color?  We use only Xerox DocuColor print technology for producing the best full color digital output possible.  And we pride ourselves on precise color matching.

HOW MANY PAGES?

In the book trade a sheet of paper bound into a book is a leaf. The leaf has two sides, each representing a book page. Determine how many pages of content will be in the book, and whether you want to print those pages on both sides of the leaf (a duplex book), or just one (a simplex book). Duplexing is less expensive, but simplex books can be more sophisticated.

CHOICE OF PAPER?

We use papers suited to high-end laser printing for crisp detail in text and imagery, and no blur or show-through from one side to the other. Most of our books are printed on white, 100 # text weight papers, in a matte or lustre finish. But we also offer specialty papers in various colors, textures and weights, depending on your needs.

THE OUTSIDE?

Are you thinking of a softcover or hardbound book?

If your book is softbound, will you want a plain or printed cover? Laminated? With folding text flaps? We offer many options. Our softcover books are generally perfect bound, with book leaves glued into the cover, but coil binding is also available.

If your book is hardbound, you have several cover and binding choices:

Custom printed and laminated cover
Book cloth, leather or synthetic leather, most of which can be foil stamped for an additional charge.
Printed dust jacket, laminated or not

Our hardcover books are generally perfect bound, with the book block and end leaves glued into the spine, but we also offer sewing options.

THE "LOOK"?

All the above constitute the "mechanical" aspects of the book.  But designing the book's interior to convey the spirit and mood is the real challenge.  Click here for our approach to designing your book.
