Designing Your Book

The reader's reaction to a book--whether a novel or a fine art book--depends greatly on the quality of design. It's a skill that can be only approximated with template-based design tools. That's why our staff includes graphics designers who specialize in top-quality book design and layout.  We understand typography, juxtaposition, color pallet, and all the nuances that matter.

We can provide as much help as you need. Consult with our designers to bring your idea to life. You’ll find our design costs reasonable and our work striking.

If you're doing your own design, and would like us to print the job, here are some guidelines for preparing your files

We print from Adobe pdf files and from InDesign/CS3.

Images should be 300 dpi at the size you need them printed.

InDesign files should be packaged (a function in the File Menu) to create a folder including fonts and images. Ask us if you need help doing this.

Prepare your book as single page files, not spreads, in RGB mode.

Allow .125" bleed, .25" if you’ve got it.

Create bleed in the InDesign document set-up window, linked in all dimensions, creating a line around your page. Drag bleeding images out to that line.

Include bleeds when you create a .pdf

Local customers can deliver projects on a disk or a thumb drive

Distance customers can mail projects on disks or send zipped files via our file transfer protocol

Okay, it's time to get serious.  Tell us about your book project, so we can help you bring it to fruition.
